Tackling different terrains

sand

Sand is probably the most common form of "off-road" for the new 4WD owner. It is fun to drive on, and more forgiving than rocks.

NEVER EVER drive on any sand area which is environmentally sensitive.

Vegetated sand dunes are extremely sensitive as they take a very long

time to grow back. Stick to unvegetated dunes and beaches, which allow

vehicular access. Most ocean areas are very sensitive to erosion, and you must keep this in mind at all times.

Lower tyre pressures will allow a wider tread area in the really soft stuff.

Driving in soft sand causes a little "hill" to be formed in front of each wheel and so the car is effectively climbing all the time. This uses a lot more power than usual and so the engine has to rev harder than usual.

Driving in sand is not very good for your fuel consumption figures either!
