The importance of the handbrake

The ability to perform a good, clean handbrake hill start is a vital 4WDing skill.

From the wide track Sierra (1988 onwards) all Suzuki models have had a conventional handbrake which operates on both the rear drum brakes only. They are less effective after the vehicle has been through mud or water as the wet linings reduce braking efficiency.

Much of the 4WDing you will do is often at odd angles or up steep inclines, sometimes with little room for error or rolling back.

Driving through mud is great fun but be aware of the effects on your brakes.
